Allergy : A Hypersensitivity

The term allergy is used to describe a malfunction of the immune system in the body causing a person to respond to a certain substance in a hypersensitive way (causing the allergic reactions). It is a response, within the body, to a substance, which is not necessarily harmful in itself, but results in an immune response and a reaction that causes symptoms and disease in a predisposed person, which in turn can cause inconvenience, or a great deal of misery.

In simple terms, it is a hyperactive response of the immune system to certain substances which are foreign to our bodies. The sensitizing substances, called allergens, may be inhaled, swallowed, or come into contact with the skin.

An allergy is everything from a runny nose, itchy eyes and palate to skin rash. In fact, allergies can be caused by just about any substance that you inhale or swallow, or that touches your skin.
