Anatomy: The Structure Of Heart

The heart looks like an upside down pear.It is situated in the ribcage in the centre of the chest between the lungs(right and left). The size is approxiamately similar to the size of an adult fist.It will get altered in certain heart diseases.

The heart is divided into four chambers. The right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle and the left ventricle. The heart is divided by a tissue called the heart septum and separates it into the right side and the left side. The atrial septum divides the upper chamber of the heart and the ventricular septum divides the lower septum of the heart
.

Right side of the heart

The right side of the heart consists of the right atrium and the right ventricle. The right atrium has the superior and the inferior vena cava. The superior vena cave get used or the deoxygenated blood from the upper part of the body i.e head ,neck arms and chest to the right atrium. The inferior vena cava gets blood from the lower parts of the body to the right atrium. The blood enters the right ventricles from where it is pumped through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs for oxygenation.

Left side of the heart

The left side of the heart is consists of the left atrium and the left ventricle. The deoxygenated blood from the lungs is oxygenated by capillaries in the lungs and sent through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium. It then passes to the left ventricle and then this oxygenated blood is sent through the aorta to various parts of the body.
