Heart transplant surgery
It is first decided by the patient as to which patient would be suitable enough to go for a heart transplant surgery. The patient is carefully examined and the necessary investigations are done followed by medications prior to the procedure. The donor organ is assessed, examined and prepared before the surgery.
The operation is done under general anaesthesia. A cut is made on the rib cage of the chest. Then the pericardium is removed and the patient’s heart is exposed. The entire heart is removed leaving the back portion of the left atrium in place “Orthotopic procedure” is used for heart transplantation. The donor’s heart is carefully cleaned and trimmed and sewn in with the remaining portion of the patient’s heart. To prevent infection and rejection of the transplant utmost sterilization is maintained and patient is on medication and discharged only when there is no scope for any complication.
