It is the inflammation of the joint. It is usually accompanied by swelling, pain and stiffness caused due to infection, trauma or degenerative disorder.
A joint is that part of the body where two bones connect with each other. The bone surfaces are covered by a synovial membrane which secretes athe synovial fluid.There is fluid called the synovial fluid which is present the the joint cavity and which allows lubrication to the bones so that they can move smoothly against each other.
In arthritis the synovial memrane becomes thickened due to inflammation .It is attacked by the white blood cells which destroy the tissue of the joint.
