The bone surfaces are covered by a synovial membrane which secretes athe synovial fluid.There is fluid called the synovial fluid which is present the the joint cavity and which allows lubrication to the bones so that they can move smoothly against each other.
In arthritis the synovial memrane becomes thickened due to inflammation .It is attacked by the white blood cells which destroy the tissue of the joint.
