Diagnosis of Heart Disease : A Complete Check Up

Diagnostic procedures for heart diseases

Sphygmomanometer(blood pressure cuff)

This instrument is used for measuring blood pressure in the arteries. It consists of a manometer (measuring meter) and an inflatable cuff connected with a tube. There is a bulb used to inflate the cuff and is connected to the cuff with a tubeThe bulb has an adjustable screw and maintains a one way pressure to inflate the cuff.

Electrocardiogram(ECG or EKG)

This is simple test which measures the electrical activity of the heart. Electrodes are placed on the wrist, ankles and chest. The current goes through the waves from the electrodes to EKG machine. These signals are then transformed into patterns and waves. The current causes the heart muscles to contract and relax. This is then recorded and interpreted by the cardio physician.

EPS study (electrophysiologic study)

This tests the electrical conduction system of the heart. A local anaesthetic and a mild sedative is given and a thin plastic tube is inserted in the vein connecting the leg with the stomach. Here the physician assesses the heart rhythm. If it is irregular then he asseses as to why there is an irregular heart beat.
